AP Lullaby
My mother always used to sing Brahms' Lullaby to me, and I wanted to do the same for my children, but some of the lyrics weren't in line with my values. I came up with some alternative lyrics, so here is my AP version of Brahms' Lullaby:
Lullaby, and good night With roses bedight With lilies be spread Thy place in my bed Lay thee down now and rest At thy mother's warm breast Lay thee down now and rest At thy mother's warm breast
Lullaby, and good night My own sweet delight Thy mother is here So sleep without fear I shall guard thee from harm Thou shalt wake in my arms I shall guard thee from harm Thou shalt wake in my armsIf you don't know the tune, the music can be found on this page: Click here. Or click here and the music will play for you.

My idea for converting churches
I've noticed that attendance at Christian services continues to decline. Many churches are finding that they now have half the membership they once had, and for financial reasons, they are forced to join with other churches that are in the same predicament. Two congregations share one building, and the other building is abandoned. There will soon be unused churches all over the country. Many of them are quite beautiful, and it would be a shame for them to go to waste. This is a terrific opportunity to transform existing buildings into buildings of learning. I propose that we convert them into libraries and schools. All we have to do is remove the Christian symbols. The huge, gorgeous, stone and brick churches should become libraries, I think -- and the more ordinary, house-looking, wooden churches should become school houses. Let's do this. I can't imagine a more noble cause, or one that would do more real good. Let's elect a government that will do this for us; and while we're waiting for that to happen, those of us who have money can start buying up old churches and doing it ourselves. Let's form a nonprofit organization. Or should I say a non-prophet organization! : ) |

My Theory of Ethical Taxation
I have my own theory of taxation. I'd like to abolish the current system. I don't think people should be taxed just for earning income. I think all taxes (income and sales) should be based on the environmental impact of an action or a product. Sales taxes would range between 0% and 10%, based on the environmental impact of the production and use of the product. All products would be clearly labeled with their percentage of tax (based on the environmental assessment of an independent agency). This would encourage consumers to choose products with lower environmental impact, which would in turn encourage manufacturers to reduce their environmental impact. Everybody wins. Government, consumer and manufacturer all benefit. Income taxes would range between 0% and 5% based on the environmental impact of the actions of the company. All employers would have to clearly state their rating (0-5) to potential employees. This would encourage people to seek employment with companies with low environmental impact, which would in turn encourage companies to reduce their environmental impact. Again, a win-win-win situation. While some people might not agree with me that this would be the ideal system, even they should admit that it would at least be an improvement on the current system. By the way, sales taxes are double income taxes so that people are encouraged to save and conserve, rather than consume. I also don't think that my system violates individual liberty, because it is based on pollution -- and I don't think people have the right to pollute. (Basically, the whole tax system would just be a big fine on pollution.) And the money would be used for things that reduce pollution in the long run -- like education (Education = fewer children per couple = less pollution). Even property taxes could be based on how well a person treats the land -- people would be encouraged to plant trees rather than cut them, for instance. (Did you know that right now the opposite is true?? People are taxed *per tree*!! There's a tax incentive to clear cut your land!! This should be reversed!!) |

Natural Beauty
I like writing letters. This one also wasn't printed.
February 8, 1999
Dear Ann Landers,
You goofed in your sexist response to "A Hairy Situation in the East." Unshaven armpits and hairy legs certainly ARE acceptable in our culture, just not for women!
Western society has always expected women to go that "extra mile" to please men, by plastering their faces with make-up, spending hours on their hair, and wearing uncomfortable high heels and stockings.
I never shave my legs or underarms, or cover my face with cosmetics, or wear uncomfortable clothes. I hasten to add that my mate finds me all the more attractive and desirable for it.
You should have told that narrow-minded creature that if he's so much in favor of shaving legs and armpits, he should start by trying it on himself! And he should put on some of those high heels while he's at it.
